Focus and concentration play an essential role on the road to achieving your goals. However, staying focused on a task can sometimes be a real challenge.

Social media notifications, emails, and other digital distractions often bombard us. Even our coworkers or family members can interrupt our Flow. Another factor that decreases your productivity is procrastination, making it even more challenging to achieve the task you initially set up to do.

Fortunately, there are simple methods we can employ to overcome these obstacles, improve our concentration, and accomplish our dreams. In this article, I will introduce you to 5 simple strategies you can try.

Let’s get started!

Eliminate Distractions

  • Take a moment to clean your workspace and ensure it has good lighting and a comfortable temperature.
  • Turn off notifications on all electronic devices.
  • Use noise-canceling headphones to block out distracting sounds.
  • Talk to your family/roommates and let them know when they can’t disturb you. Set boundaries.
  • Use a website/app blocker like 1Focus to block social media and other distracting, time-consuming content (YouTube, Netflix, Twitter, text messages, email, etc).

Prioritize and Manage Your Time

  • Create a daily routine.
  • Plan your day in advance.
  • Establish a pre-work routine that signals your brain it’s time to focus. You could meditate, do breathing exercises, write your thoughts in a journal, or review your goals for the day.
  • Do your most important task first.
  • Block time during the day for focused work. Include short breaks in between to recharge and prevent mental fatigue.
  • Time blocking helps create a structured routine and increases efficiency.
  • Try the Pomodoro technique: Focus on one task for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Or work for 90 minutes, followed by a 15 to 20-minute break.

Focus on One Thing

  • Break your big projects into smaller steps.
  • Get in the habit of focusing on one task at a time without distractions.

Exercise Regularly

  • Exercising can improve your concentration and boost your memory.
  • It doesn’t even have to be a long, hard workout. Studies have shown that even a simple act like daily walking increases brain oxygenation, stimulates creativity, and unlocks valuable subconscious thoughts contributing to greater cognitive performance.

Get Enough Sleep

  • Avoid caffeine after lunch.
  • Turn off or put away all electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime.
  • Keep your bedroom cool and quiet. The ideal room temperature is 65-68 °F (18-20 °C).
  • Keep your bedroom dark or use a sleep mask.
  • Practice deep sleep breathing exercises.
